Sparwood

Sparwoord, situated on the southeastern coal belt, has a long history of mining dating back to the 19th century.   The first mine in the area opened east of what is now Fernie in 1897.

Today the surrounding region accounts for a large portion of Canada’s steel-making coal production and exports, directly employing approximately four thousand individuals in the Kootenay-Boundary region and supporting hundreds of mining supply and service companies throughout BC.
