Mining Month 2022

The mining industry is part of British Columbia’s economic and social foundation, and will continue to be a vital contributor as the world combats climate change and works to achieve the emissions reductions targets of the Paris Agreement. Today, the minerals and metals we have been mining for over a century are critical in the transition to a low-carbon future. BC produces minerals and metals more responsibly and with fewer greenhouse gas emissions thanks to continuous efforts to adopt clean hydroelectricity, implement innovative solutions and collaborate with local Indigenous partners. We celebrate our industry’s history and look forward to what is to come in 2022 and beyond.

The Materials the World Needs

British Columbia is a responsible low-carbon producer of the metals and minerals needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. These materials help power digital connectivity and build clean energy infrastructure across the world and demand is expected to increase up to six times. B.C. is leading the way responsibly, sustainably and safely.

Innovation in Action

Copper Mountain’s Trolley Assist

Copper Mountain Mine, located 20km south of Princeton, is committed to making sure its operations are environmentally responsible and align with the Paris Agreement. As part of their commitment to reduce carbon intensity, Copper Mountain installed a one-km electric trolley assist that will displace approximately one tonne of CO2 emissions per hour for each truck. This installation is the first of its kind in North America and will help the mine work towards its goal of becoming net zero by 2035.

Taseko Mines Gibraltar Reclamation Project

Taseko Mines has partnered with Xatśūll First Nation on progressive reclamation programs to ensure that the traditional knowledge of the Xatśūll First Nation is being incorporated into all stages of the process. More than 100 hectares of the Gibraltar mine site have been reclaimed with traditional plants, shrubs and berries for local Indigenous communities to harvest upon closure. This program has led to a strong relationship between the Xatśūll First Nation and Gibraltar Mine’s environmental group, leading to employment opportunities and work experience for community members. Taseko’s Gibraltar Mine continues to establish and foster relationships with local stakeholders and Indigenous community members to ensure the preservation of native species and traditional practices in the region.

BC’s Responsible, Low-Carbon Mining Industry

BC produces the minerals and metals needed for clean technology more responsibly and with fewer emissions than our competitors. Our industry has a long history of adopting innovative mining methods and new technologies that contribute to a greener sector not just in BC but around the world. BC mines are helping to build the future, while creating jobs and benefits for workers and communities in regions across the province.
